STAYING SAFE

Evacuation centers should only be considered as a shelter of last resort. Once an evacuation order is given, a list of open evacuation centers will be announced. Details will be posted on www.facebook.com/sxmgov and www.sintmaartengov.org

BOATS

If you own a boat, remember to secure it properly. Use double lines at a marina or consider dry-dock storage. Never try to ride out a hurricane in your boat.

STORM SURGE ZONES

Storm surge is the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane. It occurs when water from the ocean is pushed on shore by the force of tropical storms or hurricanes.

** A Storm Surge Planning Zone is an area that could be affected by a storm surge of 1 1/2 feet or higher during a hurricane. Evacuation decisions are heavily predicated on storm surge planning.
